How does an Idaho veteran certify a veteran-owned business?
Apply through the SBA VetCert program for federal VOSB or SDVOSB certification. Before applying, confirm that the business meets SBA size, ownership, and control rules and has an active SAM.gov registration.
Idaho does not have a separate veteran-owned certification or veteran-specific preference for state contracts. Federal certification and Idaho vendor registration are different processes.

Apply in Five Steps
- Step 01
Confirm the business qualifies
The company must qualify as small under its applicable NAICS size standard and be at least 51% directly and unconditionally owned and controlled by one or more eligible veterans.
- Step 02
Activate the SAM.gov registration
Register the business in SAM.gov and keep its legal name, ownership information, address, and NAICS codes accurate. SAM registration and VetCert certification are separate requirements.
- Step 03
Gather ownership and veteran records
Prepare veteran or service-disabled veteran documentation plus formation, ownership, and governance records such as the operating agreement, bylaws, and stock ledger when applicable.
- Step 04
Apply through MySBA Certifications
Complete the free VetCert application in the MySBA Certifications portal. The application must show that qualifying veterans control both long-term decisions and daily operations.
- Step 05
Respond and maintain the certification
Answer SBA requests promptly. After approval, keep SAM and certification records aligned, report material changes, complete required attestations, and recertify when required.
Why SAM.gov Matters
SAM.gov registration does not replace VetCert. It establishes the entity for federal awards, while the SBA certification verifies VOSB or SDVOSB status. Keep business details and NAICS codes consistent across both systems.
